A Number of Injured as Turbulence Strikes A Delta Airlines Plane Arriving in Sydney, Australia

Multiple passengers and crew sustained injuries following a Delta Airlines flight originating in LA to Sydney encountered turbulence this past Friday.

The flight, numbered 41 "encountered brief turbulence" as it landed at the Sydney airport, an airline spokesperson stated. Four flight attendants required medical attention.

Emergency medical services said they treated a total of five people, and took a trio to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that included spinal discomfort and head pain. The patients' ages were between their 30s up to the 70s.

It is the most recent case of aircraft encountering atmospheric disturbance, with aviation specialists saying that climate change is a significant contributor.

The aircraft was carrying 245 people and 15 crew members on the Airbus A350, the Delta spokesperson noted, stating that the plane landed "safely" at the airport at 6:48 a.m. local time on Friday.

Emergency responders said they were alerted just a mere three minutes before the plane arrived, and ambulances were ready and waiting at the airport.

Why plane turbulence is growing more frequent - and potentially more dangerous.

During the past year, twenty-five passengers and crew were hurt when a separate Delta aircraft, travelling from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, experienced "considerable" rough air just 120 minutes into the long-haul flight, and was forced to make an unscheduled landing.

In 2024, travelers and staff on a Singapore Airlines jet went through a frightening brief five-second period of extreme instability. A traveler died and dozens were injured, as individuals not fastened in rose out of their seats and fell back down.

Bumpy air is not uncommon during flights, and while instances of significant turbulence are reportedly becoming more frequent, they are remained quite uncommon.

Estimates show that there are approximately thousands of instances of severe or worse turbulence each year, out of a total of more than 35 million flights that currently occur worldwide.

Strong atmospheric disturbance is defined as when the up and down movements of a aircraft passing through disturbed air exert greater than 1.5g-force on your body - a strong enough force to propel you from your seat if you weren't wearing a restraint.

As a changing climate alters weather patterns, researchers alert that flying could become less smooth: shifts in temperature and changing jet streams in the higher altitudes are projected to heighten the frequency and intensity of severe turbulence.
