Steve Bannon, Tucker Carlson and... Liz Truss? Exploring the Ex- PM's Attempt for Maga

Britain's shortest-serving prime minister, began the first edition of her video series with a promise to expose "those with ill intent" striving to weaken Western democracies. She stated she would lay bare how an "international network of leftists work to undermine democracy and the public's choice."

"We will examine the Maga phenomenon and understand how this can be accomplished in Britain," the former PM stated. "Our guests will include the key figures of the Trumpist political sphere."

In advance of the program's debut, there was a notably ardent backer. "This marks the start of a sort of revolution," said John Solomon. The right-leaning Just the News platform will publish the Truss's new broadcasts.

Forging Alliances in the Maga-Verse

UK-based allies, such as a counselor supportive of Reform, have also helped her launch the Liz Truss Show. Its staging is professional, if basic. Truss has amassed a subscriber base of 10k in her debut week and her premiere garnered tens of thousands of views in that timeframe.

This represents a humble beginning, but in partnering with Solomon, Truss is being thrust into a mature right-wing media network producing and amplifying Make America Great Again themes. Its obsessions encompass accusations of information control by the mainstream media and a desire to eradicate a shadowy government apparatus – which she attributes her downfall to for the rapid conclusion of her calamitous premiership.

"Solomon's outlet is not well-known outside of the Maga world, but it does have credibility there, mostly due to John Solomon, who provides analysis on pro-Trump shows like the program hosted by Steve Bannon and has even interviewed the former president," said Alex Hinton, who has closely studied the Trumpist political wave.

A Divisive Associate

Truss's attempt to transplant the pro-Trump media model to the UK has drawn her nearer to divisive personalities such as John Solomon.

He set up his media outlet in the wake of backlash following accusations of pushing inaccurate reports about Joe Biden's anticorruption effort in Ukraine, as well as controversial stories about one-time diplomat to Ukraine.

Solomon's reporting were echoed throughout the pro-Trump outlets, with the journalist featuring as a common interviewee on Sean Hannity's influential Fox News program. The former president personally endorsed Solomon's reporting.

Solomon made the reports about Ukraine in a series of columns for the outlet the political newspaper, where he had already been re-labelled as a columnist following internal criticism over his articles. His narratives were central in Trump's demand for the Ukrainians to look into Hunter Biden and his father in that year. These actions resulted in impeachment proceedings against Trump. Senators later acquitted the then-president.

Not long after he exited the Hill in late 2019, the publication announced it was conducting a examination of his reporting concerning Ukraine. It determined Solomon had used unreliable sources and said he "failed to identify key facts about key Ukrainian sources, including the fact that they had been formally accused or were under investigation."

Becoming Part of the Sphere

Solomon's own broadcast spots are a sign of the conservative ecosystem the former prime minister is joining. Solomon mentioned his backing of Truss's project on a program he presents on the conservative cable network, a rightwing cable channel that is the base for the conservative firebrand Steve Bannon and on which Tucker Carlson also appears. The ex-PM has already hosted the political operative on one of her first podcasts.

By partnering with the journalist and his outlet, the former leader has become a niche participant in a much wider network of conservative media outlets that frequently amplify each other's content.

His personal broadcasts have often featured figures such as Mike Benz, a political voice whose disparagement of the foreign aid agency was referenced by the X owner as grounds for closing the international development organization.

An International Strategy

Even though her awkward delivery and career difficulties have invited ridicule in Britain, some US observers are not discounting her bid to revamp her image as a British branch of the pro-Trump media ecosystem.

"You have to take individuals such as her as significant, although you may not want to take them literally," commented a Democratic strategist, who worked in the Obama White House.

"It was evident how in 2024 President Trump utilized that media network to get his message out. Certainly that network spreads and shapes debate overseas. It looks quite apparent to me that the environment in the Britain are similar to what enabled this parallel press sphere to flourish here."

Professor Alan Finlayson, said the internet-based conservative network was already making its presence felt in Britain.

"Digital media transcends national boundaries," Finlayson remarked. "There exists a sort of atmosphere within which ideas travel – at times taking an extreme form and other times more moderately – but which is interlinked."

The academic said the growth of the online right in the UK in recent times meant the "potential to have a growing impact is considerable."
