Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

As any prominent honors show nears, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. But it is an essential concession in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
